Jason is three years old and lives in Evans, Colorado. He was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) (with an intact Atrial Septum). HLHS is commonly referred to as having “half a heart” because the left ventricle and aorta do not grow properly, and the right side of the heart tries to compensate by circulating blood to both the lungs and body for as long as it can. Jason has undergone four open-heart surgeries (he is post Glenn), fifteen heart catheterization procedures, G-tube insertion and removal, and SubQICD Placement.
For Mary and Anthony, having a Heart Hero in their life means that they face obstacles that most cannot even fathom. It means that although they can’t see their son’s future clearly, they still cherish every moment they have with him. Having a Heart Hero means they don’t take anything for granted.
“We witness a miracle every single day with every single heartbeat.”
The Heart Hero Cape helps Mary and Anthony show the world what a real hero looks like- in the hearts of small children facing extraordinary circumstances, like their son, Jason. Jason is strong, loving, caring, and fierce- all necessary qualities to overcome the obstacles he’s been faced with.
