Leah is a 33-year-old Heart Hero from Minneapolis, Kansas. She was born with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and a torn mitral valve. In the upper chambers of the heart (the atria), there is a wall separating the chambers, called a septum. ASD occurs when there is a hole in the wall, allowing more blood to flow through the lungs than normal. Leah went through open-heart surgery to repair her ASD and mitral valve at age three.
“I am a Heart Hero. It’s a surreal title for me. Growing up, I knew I had limitations that other kids didn’t have, but the CHD Awareness movement wasn’t as prevalent (as it is now). I am very proud of my accomplishments as I am starting to understand just how far I’ve come,” says Leah. She attributes perseverance, competitiveness and acceptance of certain limitations to helping her overcome her CHD. At times it was Leah vs. CHD, but she has come through it like a true champion.
Leah and her family incorporate celebrating her surgery into their Thanksgiving celebration (due the proximity to the holiday). She got her Heart Hero Cape for her 33rd birthday and is now coming to realize the strength and courage that got her to where she is today. Leah is now married and is a wonderful example of living a full life as an adult with CHD.

I am so very proud of my sister! I have always looked up to her as my older sister but as we have grown up i have really began to understand what all she has overcome. She is not only a survivor but she has also competed in 2 half marathons and several other road races! Love you Leah

We remember that day very well and what a beautiful gift of God you were and have become. The world has been blessed for all these years you have been granted. I am sure that it would be overwhelming if you just stop and think how many lives you have touched, through the years, not only within your family but though your everlasting gifts and talents you share. Love and Blessing.

Leah, I can not count all the crazy adventures being married to you has given me. Two great children and a life that is always moving, I can’t even remember the scared, nervous young man I was before I met you. One of the greatest compliments I think a spouse can give is “I know I am a better person because of you.” Thank you Leah.
